July is a special time of year as it’s Disability Pride Month! Recognizing the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act into law on July 26, 1990, the historic legislation that guarantees equal opportunities for people with disabilities is indeed a time to celebrate. In addition to celebrating over 30 years of federal protections for individuals with disabilities, there’s still a nice chunk of summer still ahead of us all. Take a look at what’s new this month at Easterseals Hawaii...

Early Intervention (EI)

Great news! COVID-19 Vaccinations are now available for children 6 months of age and older! Learn more about COVID-19 Vaccines for Children and Teens and read on for more information. The CDC recommends COVID-19 vaccines for everyone 6 months and older and boosters for everyone 5 years and older, if eligible. If you would like additional information on vaccinating children with developmental delays and/or underlying medical conditions, the CDC’s website has a helpful page with strategies to improve COVID-19 vaccine accessibility for children with special healthcare needs and they also have a Frequently Asked Questions section on their website. The State of Hawaii also has an online Vaccination Portal to help families find vaccination sites in their geographic area.

“We Wish You Well” – An ESH Family Story

“Easterseals Early Intervention Zero to 3 was the jumpstart program that I was in search of after observing a speech delay in my children. My family was partnered with Alyssa & Alisa from the Kapolei Early Intervention Program. Throughout the program, Alyssa consistently displayed an incredible amount of regard and understanding when discussing the concerns and future goals of my children. She always ensured that our needs were being met and conducted follow-up meetings to keep me updated on my children's progress. From our first virtual session to our last, Alisa has been an absolute godsend throughout this struggle. Her displays of patience, compassion and encouragement have gone exceedingly beyond my expectations. Alisa has shared her knowledge of "how-to" with me so that I may help my children at home and the results have been miraculous! Both Alyssa & Alisa have showcased dedication to my family and genuine care from beginning to end. It has been a pleasure beyond measure to have worked with this team. Therefore, we wish you well, Alyssa & Alisa...as you both continue to help others as you both have helped us.”

The Exceptional Family Member Program

The Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP) supports military and qualifying service members and their families with exceptionalities. To enroll, you’ll need to fill out a DD2792 and DD2792-1 form. Your child’s Early Intervention Care Coordinator can help you complete the forms and submit them!
